Has anyone gone through genetic counseling/testing?

I hav had 2 consecutive miscarriages. Neither pregnancy lasted past 5 weeks before I miscarried. Now my doctor is taking tests and I am going to be getting genetic counseling. Has anyone ever gone through genetic counseling? What was your outcome?

Im SO nervous and scared that something bad will come out of this!!!!!!!!!

What was your experience like?

I was sent for genetic counseling via webcam at my local hospital only after being diagnosed with an mthfr mutation. Basically it causes my blood to clot for no reason especially during pregnancy. I had two healthy pregnancies, a placental abruption - the baby's fine - and a miscarriage before being diagnosed. At the genetic counseling that I had they just explained the mutation to me (I was still confused even after talking to them), and answered any questions I had. They also explained what would happen if I got pregnant again.

It's not a bad thing to have a diagnosis if there is a condition that you have that can be treated! I am 28 weeks into my pregnancy and have been on a baby aspirin for the duration of my pregnancy to keep my blood thin. Most problems that they find when doing the tests are easily manageable and there are things that they can do to help you go full term. The genetic counseling will explain to you the possible problems and solutions that are available to you. It's nothing to be scared of!

I wish you luck!

Hi there,

I have not, but I just wanted to offer some assurance that it could very well be something very simple. Two very early miscarriages sounds like it could be low progesterone. If you haven't ruled that out, you should. It's a pretty easy fix and with treatment your chances are excellent of a full-term baby next time.

Good luck.

i worked in a high risk perinatal center for a while. Usually with genetic counseling and testing, they just ask a BUNCH of questions about you and your family history and the fathers. May undergo bloodwork as well and ultrasounds if you are already preg. Once they have found a possible reason for why you may be miscarrying so early (even though it is scary) they may be able to correct it. It is nerve racking to go through this process, but it really is better to know now than to wait and find out it could have been easily corrected. We lost our first a little less than 4 weeks along 5 months ago and still ttc our first. so good luck to you :)
