How much does genetic testing cost (US$) to establish breed purity when there is doubt as to its authenticity?

I refer to a 12.8 lb. chihuhua which looks like no other chihuahua any veternarian has encountered. We paid $1800 for the wonderful dog, so if in fact its impure, I'd like to recover a fair portion of the price we paid for it plus the cost of genetic assays should they prove impure breed.

That is either one huge Chihuahua, one very over weight Chihuahua, one very badly bred Chihuahua or a mixed breed. A friend had this done a few months ago. I believe she paid something like $145. I'm sure it will vary vet to vet. Not all vets are offering this as yet. Sadly my friend found out the dog she bought as a purebred Chihuahua was not just a mixed breed, but a mix of 3 breeds. She loves her none the less. I'm hoping you find out your Chi is indeed a purebred. Good luck!

Edit: I'm thinking you must have bought the pup as show quality to have paid as much? 3 of mine combined cost less than $1800. The 4th one is show quality and I still never paid that much for him.

Should be listed on the AKC site. If you didn't see either of the parents, both of them and the pup would need to be swabbed!

There is NO genetic test that tests for breed purity.

DNA tests can prove parentage nothing more...if in doubt contact the AKC and tell them your suspisions and request a DNA kit...you can then request parentage verification..

I have no idea but will say htat htis is a very poor quality chihuahua as the standard for a chihuahua is a dog under 6 pounds ( see akc.org)

Do you have papers and see about getting a generation papers going back at least 3 generations??
I sell my chihuahuas for $350-$500 and most never get over 5-6 ponds several dont get over 4 pounds.

The easy way to determine genetic purity is by registration, and a reputable breeder. You do not find these in front of wal mart, in the paper, on the internet advertising.
