Should I have a genetic test for cancer? |
My grandmother had ovarian cancer at age 40 and my mother had it at age 32. I have heard that the earlier a cancer occurs, the more likely it is to have a familial link. Is this true? I'm now 30 so I'm close to the age that my mother was when she was diagnosed. She was incredibly lucky - she had no symptoms and was only diagnosed because she underwent surgery for an unrelated condition and they spotted the tumour. About 5% of ovarian cancers are caused by an inherited faulty gene; inherited genes that increase the risk of ovarian cancer include BRCA1 and BRCA2. the same genes that increase the risk of breast cancer. next time you are at the Dr have a chat with him / her about it. You are checked every 3yrs for cervical cancer but this does not include the ovaries. Yes definitely. I was in similar position as BRCA genes cause huge increase in Breast and Ovarian cancer where family history is high like yours. I had the gene test done and was positive and I am now looking at options available to me. My head is wrecked from it at the moment. Take your time and before you have the test make sure you avail of counselling and are fully aware of the repercussions of finding out. Discuss this with the doctor and the fact that there is a family history of the disease. visit the following url it would definatly be best to, the sooner diagnosed, the better, go soon because if you have a family history of it you could have it allready, but dont just take my advice, go to have a test! Demand annual ultrasounds - you are at risk I am too - my health authority refuses. Shout and shout again till your heard I am! |
