Should genetic testing be used to select a child鈥檚 characteristics?

"Modern genetics can prevent the tragedy of a life doomed by heredity; embryos can now be screened for some genetic diseases. But what constitutes a disease? Should genetic testing be used to select a child鈥檚 characteristics? If so What characteristics?"

This is a discussion going on in one of my doctorate classes. I will not be plagiarizing any of you. I was just surprised by some of the opinions in class and wanted to hear some of yours.

I believe it is wrong to "custom make" your child, per science of these days.
Each child/human being is unique, and precious as they are. I don't know how many, cannot recall the details of each one, however there have been pregnancies where someone had the genetic testing (amniotic fluid testing, I think it's called) and found something wrong with the child. Could have aborted, however, when the child was born, the child was NORMAL.The test during the pregnancy was WRONG.
