Genetic Counseling/Testing? |
Has anyone had genetic counceling or testing and is willing to share their story? Feel free to Email me at amandageister@sbcglobal.net I have a little brother who has a disability that is genetic. My husband is in the Navy, and one of the local bases offered us free genetic counseling, so we did it. We knew that they would ask a lot of questions about the people in our extended family, so before we went, we each called our mothers to ask them to fill us in on everything that they could. I don't know how beneficial it really was for us. I have known for years that I have a higher risk of having a child with the same disability as my little brother, the Dr. was however, able to give us some percentages to mull over while we discussed if we wanted to try to get pregnant or not. We did still decide to try to have a child of our own. For one, although we have a higher risk then say the general public, it is very possible that we would have a healthy child. And secondly, although my little brother has to use a wheelchair, he is a bright, active, wonderful person, and he would be a wonderful role model for any child, with or without a disability. Of course we would love to have a healthy child, but we decided that we would be happy and feel blessed to have any child. Unfortunately, we later found that we each have several other factors that has, so far, prevented us from conceiving, but we are still trying, and we are looking into adopting...possibly a child with special needs. Genetic Counseling/Testing is a relative new practice. At one time it was only available to a select few, with an MD's referral. If you have a relative in your extended family (Grandparents and current family) that has shown signs, that something might be wrong medically, you might want to get genetic tested. However, if a particular disease does not run in your family, then this might not be necessary. Dr S. Clark Edrees MD |
