Oral hsv-1 is incredibly infectious - more so than genital hsv-2. It is perfectly happy to infect the genitals - the only thing that makes it less likely to do so is if you have hsv-1 on your mouth yourself, since it gives you a high level of immunity against catching the same virus down below. A lot of us have oral herpes hsv-1, so a lot of us are pretty safe. If you don't have it though, you ARE at high risk of getting it genitally if your partner gives you oral sex. It happened to both me and my sister.

You would now haveHSV1 genitally and NOT HSV2. Since the site of preference for HSV1 is the mouth area the outbreaks would not be as frequent or as intense they would be in the mouth.
