Why did i only get genital herpes if i also had oral sex?

I recently got diagnosed with genital herpes but i also went down on the guy so why dont i have the herpes on my lips or what not??

Your mouth is actually slightly less vulnerable to herpes infection.

When exposed to the herpes virus, there is about a 75% chance of contracting it - but the virus needs to be able to enter through mucous membrane or minute fissures in the epidermis. Female genitals are particularly vulnerable - especially with the friction of intercourse. A woman is more likely to catch herpes than a man, despite the fact that since more women have it, a man is more likely to be exposed to the virus than a woman.

I caught genital herpes from a partner with oral herpes. I kissed him a lot that night, but he only gave me oral sex for about 30 seconds. I still caught it genitally rather than orally. Obviously, the genitals are a vulnerable area. Some people do catch it in both areas if contact occurs in two places, but I am not one of them. And I have genital hsv-1, which 'prefers' the mouth but still chose not to infect mine!

It's hard to know why you get herpes in one place and not the other.

One possibility is that you got HSV2, which "prefers" the genitals and is a bit (but only a bit) more difficult to catch orally.

Maybe the exact place on his skin where the virus was didn't touch your face, but only your genitals.

Or maybe your face just dodged a bullet this time, but your genitals did not.

Herpes can be pretty mysterious.
