Are oral herpes and genital herpes the same thing?

When I was a child I used to get a really bad rash and sores around my mouth and i was hospitalized for a couple of months for it. I would have them for months at a time but as I got older, they eventually dissappeared and I havent had anything since. I was told it was exzema until recently when my mum told my boyfriend that she had tests done when i was younger and they came back positive for herpes. She thinks I may have caught it from simply kissing my dad goodnight. But i have been tested for std's at a health clinic and nothing came up. If i did catch it then does that mean that my boyfriend would have it as well? We have both performed oral sex on eachother before so does that mean we could both have contracted it genitally? Are oral and genital herpes the same thing?

So if he has contracted it and he goes down on me or i go down on him then can it become genital herpes for either of us?

Herpes type 1 and type 2 are different, but they are very similar.

You CAN pass both types to different locations (like you said, through oral sex and other forms of contact) Then you would have oral herpes type 2 or genital herpes type 1.

Just because you 'might' have it, does not mean that you have passed it to your BF. Maybe you should both go to the Doc together to get tested.

Also, just because you were tested for STD's does not mean that you were tested for herpes. In most cases you have to specifically ask your Doc to be tested for certain STD's (especially herpes if you are not broke out) Make it a point to always ask *what you are being tested for, what are you not being tested for and what else can you be tested for.*

Good luck to you and just to ease your mind, about 80% of adults have oral herpes, most of them contracted it when they were a kid.... its just a skin rash...its really no big deal.
