Is it a health risk to not treat genital herpes?

I believe that I've caught herpes (when I was unfaithful after my partner was unfaithful even though we were shortly not together... LONG STORY), I have two blister things for the past couple weeks. It doesnt bother me much at all, and I am not one to take a daily drug. My boyfriend knows my worries and doesnt care.Weve just decided to not have sex when I have that. And he states that having herpes not would bother him because it doesnt put his health at risk. We are in a commited relationship, and will not be having sex with other people.( No risk of transmitting other diseases) Considering all this, wouldnt it be fine not to take treatment? Is there reallt no health risks? ( besides the blisters)

I refer to my genital herpes as ----
An occasional contagious zit or sore

It doesn't bother me & I don't have sex when I have it.
I do NOT treat it with any prescriptions or pills
It stays away longer if you are stress-free, eat right & take vitamins...and of course - keep the genital area clean & dry.
Certain other things trigger an outbreak - NON-cotton panties rubbing, vibrating razors, sun exposure, eating alot of peanuts or strawberrys. Triggers to an outbreak are similar to most - but everybody has differences.
To keep him safe - recognize that you're contagious from the 1st tingle/itch you feel until the scabs fall off (sounds gross - sorry) and don't have sex at all - until the entire cycle is thru. Most people contract herpes in the pre-sore/itching & tingling stage because not everyone knows they're contagious before the sore/blister appears!

so NO you don't need a prescription or pills - it's fine to just take care of yourself & your partner and NOT treat it medically - I don't take any meds at all!
FYI>>>Peroxide, rubbing alcohol & baths in salt help dry out the sores & make them go away faster!

no there arent health risks..the medicine jus really helps w/ the outbreaks and pain you go through..it also helps prevent spreading it to an extent...if it isnt a problem for him, and you dont want to take medicine, then thats fine...it would just make the situation easier to deal with

You do NOT have to take the cyclovirs (like Valtrex) daily. That is generally recommended if you have more than 6 outbreaks per year. It is elective if you have less than that (and many couples do want that, and that's cool -- it really does cut the risk of transmission).

But in general, if you have the blisters and they're not severe or frequent, you can actually take cyclovirs when you feel an outbreak coming on and not have to take them the rest of the time. Taking Valtrex when you start to feel that tingle or ache will cut down on the viral shedding and shorten your outbreaks. You should still abstain from sex during that time, though, but at least it'll be a shorter and lighter bout of the blisters.

As for your overall health, not streating a STD like herpes can be a risk because it can aggravate other infections and make you susceptible to other STDs. Herpes is a stress on your immune system. Having that constant stress on it can make you likely to pick up more ailments in the rest of your body (like colds and such). Think of it this way: your immune system is fighting hard when it is trying to deal with the HSV. That leaves it short on help when it comes to fighting other things you might have to deal with.

Taking the meds when you need them will help make the fight easier for your immune system. So even if you choose not to take Valtrex everyday, you can still take it during your outbreaks to help the fight.
