Is it safe to start a family with genital herpes?

My best friend has genital herpes. She's been with her husband for 5 years now, and they want to start a family. She and I both want to know is it ok for them to have unprotected sex to start their family? Will he get infected? Will she have to take some kind of medication during her pregnancy? If so, will it hurt the baby?

It would be my plan to get to the best ob-gyn guy in the area for the answers. The implications are pretty significant.

I think it is fine as long as her gyno is kept up to date on anyone's stage of infection...If a woman has active herpes at the time of birth it can cause complications and may require a caesar ... I would be checking with the DR because I am told there can be very nasty complications if there is active herpes at the time of delivery...there are lot's of anti body tests available for herpes sufferers so I would be checking out who has what...

Yes.
I learned about people who have these diseases in science class and it was horrible to see the pictures of the babies when they were born because the disease made them all deformed, And people were like crying, It was super sad.

But i would go to the doctor to get better information.

Or its always good to adopt and be on the safe side.

No unprotected sex. you don't have to have intercourse to have a baby from her husband. and your baby doesn't have to come out the Vagina causing it to get the herpes. like a c section.
