If your partner has genital herpes, is it possible to not contract over a 2 year period of unprotected sex?

My partner has recently been diagnosed. If there has been no previous outbreaks what are the chances that I have not contracted it from him and he is just having his own outbreak awakening but I am safe as long as I don't come in contact with the outbreak. I have had no symptoms.

you know he could of caught from you some people show no symptoms and are carriers...just before an outbreak and just after and while are all catching risk times herpes can look like a crop of blisters a blister/ ulcer or just a tiny cut

You can be exposed to herpes and not get it, there are things you can do to help prevent you from getting herpes. If there are no signs of an out break then your risk of getting herpes would be small also if they are using some kind of suppressive therapy then your risk is even further reduced.
As long as he is being honest about telling you when his out breaks are coming and you don't have sex then you are pretty safe. There is only a small chance that herpes can be passed on even when there are no signs of an out break.
Don't mean to scare you but some people with herpes don't experience symptoms for months or years after contracting it so you may want to get your self tested for herpes regularly to be on the safe side.

Generally speaking you can only contract genital herpes when the person is having an outbreak and has the blistery sores on their skin.

If you had contracted it you would have had an outbreak very shortly after contracting it, so within 7-10 days.
the first outbreak is most often the worst. If you are experiencing any itching and discomfort go and see the doctor because they can prescribe you medication, usually Valtrex, which will lessen the symptoms and shorten the length of the outbreak.

So it is possible that if in 2 years you never came in to any contact with the sores that you don't have it.

Poppy is right. It is very possible that you have unprotected sex with an infected person and still do not contract it. The risk of transmission is the highest when the person has outbreak. If there is no outbreak, the chance is very low.

Remember, there is always a chance even if your partner does not have outbreak. BUT it is not very likely. Even if you contract herpes from him, you are going to join a very large number of people who have HSV-2 (more than 20% in north america).
