Genital herpes. . plague or nuisance? |
Genital herpes. . plague or nuisance? I think the people who consider it a plague either don't have it or haven't come to terms with having it. It isn't fun to have. There are social stigmas associated with HSV that make it feel like a dirty little secret. Physically, it's a nuisance or a non-issue for most people. In most cases outbreaks can be controlled with suppressive therapy and the number and severity of outbreaks lessen over time. In my own case, the physical is a non-issue because I've never had a recognizable symptom. I came to terms with the emotional aspects through education and support of my friends, family and other HSV+ people. Socially, having HSV has almost been a gift. I've gained so many positive experiences through being "out" and sharing my story. I'm also much more careful about my dating and sexual choices. Genital herpes is certainly not fun. It never "goes away". Some people will have a very painful initial outbreak and maybe a few minor outbreaks and then never be bothered by them again. Others might have recurrent painful outbreaks that happen often. There are medications out there that help supress the virus. Hope this helps. Personally I find it a great excuse when I don't want to go out on a date with a dweeb. Plague, as it can be very painful for a woman. plaugue |
