Can genital herpes be spread to somebody with cold sores? |
I have genital herpes. My girlfriend gets cold sores. I've been researching this with varied results. I know that HSV2 can be spread with or without an outbreak present. How else is it transmitted besides open sores? I've been reading that HSV2 can be spread to the mouth, is that in the form of HSV1? What do the sores look like, HSV1 or HSV2? With all that I've read, I haven't found anything about people with cold sores on their genitals or herpes outbreaks on their faces. Is oral sex safe for us? All information is much appreciated. Cold sores can cause genital herpes, and genital herpes can cause cold sores. Herpes simplex virus 1 is typically cold sores, while herpes simplex virus 2 is typically genital herpes. I say "typically" though because both herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 can cause BOTH cold sores and genital herpes. If a person with cold sores gives another person oral sex, that person can develop genital herpes. In fact, I've read 30% of people with genital herpes have herpes simplex virus 1 (typically cold sores). I have read conflicting articles about whether or not cold sores can be spread when the person currently has them or not. Some sources say they can NOT be spread when the person does not have an active sore and other sources say they CAN be passed whether the person has an active sore or not. Also, if a person has genital herpes and someone gives them oral sex it can cause that person to develop cold sores. Genital herpes CAN be spread whether the person has sores present or not though, unlike cold sores. I contracted genital herpes over 5 years ago from a guy who had no signs or symptoms of the virus (like an outbreak). My fiance got it from me about 10 months ago. I hadn't had an outbreak in almost 2 years and I still passed it to him! Sores caused by herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 look exactly alike. Usually genital herpes is several sores, where cold sores are only one or two. If your girlfriend were to give you oral sex it is possible for you to develop herpes simplex virus 1 (along with the herpes simplex virus 2 you already have). And, it is possible for her to develop herpes simplex virus 2 on her lips and mouth (along with the herpes simplex virus 1 she already has). But, if you were to give your girlfriend oral sex you can NOT pass anything to her. Since you don't have cold sores you can not pass herpes to her by giving her oral sex. You can pass herpes to her by having vaginal or anal sex though. Source(s): Personal experience. I have had genital herpes for over 5 years. yep YES you can get genital herpes from cold sores. It happened to a friend of mine who is in a monogamous married relationship. She got it from her husband who had a cold sore on his lip. The doctor told her that once it spreads from the lip to the genitals it becomes genital herpes. I don't think you can get it unless there is a cold sore or canker sore at the time of oral sex. If you have genital herpes, you can spread it to your girlfriend through any kind of sex. If she has a cold sore, she can give you that. So you can swap strains and live happily ever after.... Look the other day in class we were discussing with our microbiologist about hsv1 &hsv2 and the difference. If you have the genital herpes yes you can pass it without it being seen to the human eye. It becomes active before an outbreak and is still active a few days after the outbreak as well. Oral sex will also arise on the mouth of the peson who gives it. Both are caused by the same virus. The difference in sight between a regular cold sore is just the sore will begin to itch and then the cold sore will become pus like and look like a blister. It will secrete watery fluid and the crust over in yellow and heal like a wound. Genital Herpes also will be the same but it will consist of many little blister bumps around the sore.As well as on the genital area. If it's on the genital area it will be very painful and itchy at the same time. It will be very uncomfortable. They are cause by the same virus but they are 2 different types. Also he said in some cases it can be transfered from birth and you not know it until later in life. You get the outbreaks becasue somthing triigers it and also you can get the sores anywhere the body wants to put it the body has no concept of where it will pop up at.But wherever you had one before you will likely always get it in the same place again. Hope you got your answer it's all facts. YES... I work in a medical clinic. And this question was asked of one our GYN docs. And he told them that genital herpes can be started from a cold sore/fever blister. When the cold sore first begins and it is a blister you can contract a cold sore or cause someone to have genital herpes. Once the cold sore has dried up, and the scab has fallen off you cannot infect anyone. But still be very cautious and be sure it is healing skin. Only when the blister is there and oozing or runny. As for what a cold sore looks like it varies from person to person. Some are blisters, and some look like red patches on the lip, or any part of the face. And some people get it worse than others. Just remember not to kiss or touch anyone when it first breaks out. And always sanitize your hands right after touching or applying any ointments to the blister. |
