Can genital Herpes lie dormant for years, unknown to the person, and eventually have outbreaks years later??? Yes, it can. A person usually will have their first outbreak anywhere from 2-20 days after being infected with the virus. But not everyone has their first outbreak in that time frame. For me personally, I had my first outbreak about 3 weeks after I was infected with the virus, and for some it can take months and even years for them to show any signs or symptoms. The virus will lie dormant in nerve fibres and seasonally erupt when the immunity weakens. When a person is infected with this virus, it will stay for the rest of his life.
