How effective is aciclovir for genital herpes?

I think it's great. I personally use acyclovir when I have a genital herpes outbreaks. My outbreaks last anywhere from a few days to about a week. I haven't had an outbreak in almost 3 years now!

I have tried every medication for genital herpes except Valtrex (which seems to be the most popular). When I had my first outbreak it was so severe I was prescribed acyclovir, famciclovir, acyclovir ointment, and Vicodin all at the same time! I was in a ton of pain! Source(s): Personal experience. It's very effective. And it's generic; much cheaper than Valtrex.
