What is the best treatment for genital herpes. eg. anti viral soap, anti viral tablets? |
eg. anti viral soap, anti viral tablets - what brands Can these be bought in chemists, is a script required? Request info from people with experience. There is no antiviral soap, and in fact I would keep any soap away from a herpes sore - it will irritate it. The most effective treatments are tablets containing specific antiviral drugs such as aciclovir, valciclovir and famciclovir, which require prescriptions in most countries. These are very effective at preventing attacks, and work very well early in an attack - ie at the tingling stage. Once the attack has been going for a day or two they don't do much. You can also buy these drugs as ointments for treating cold sores without a prescription in many countries either from your pharmacy or even in the supermarket. They will also work for genital herpes, although not as well as the tablets. The earlier in the attack you use them, the better they work. They won't cure herpes infections, but can shorten and sometimes stop attacks. Zovirax, Famvir and Valtrex are brands of ointments available in most countries. Ask your pharmacist. There is no permanent cure for genital herpes. The doc can prescribe you some anti-viral medicine to control the outbreaks, but the virus will always be with you. |
