How can you find out which type of genital herpes you have?

Doctors said that my case was mild but nothing else.

Hello:
This answer is in response to your question posted concerning herpes.
There are now 8 types of herpes viruses.
Herpes simplex virus I is responsible for your typical fever blisters, cold sores and oral ulcers.
Herpes simplex virus II is responsble for genital herpes.
So HSV I is usually above the waist and HSV II is usually below the waist.
Researcher used to think that II couldnt go above the waist and vice versa. Now there is evidence that you can transmit HSV II into the mouth and throat and transmit HSV I to the genitals, although rare.
Go to your doctor and ask for the following blood tests: Herpes simplex virus I and II IgM and IgG antibodies. This will tell you without a doubt whether you have one or both types and can also tell you if you have had it for a long time or recently contracted it. That is what the IgG ( long term infection) and IgM (recent exposure) antibody tests will tell you.
I hope this helped answer your question and alleviate some of your concerns.
Regards,
Warren Shaffer, M.D.
Most likely, your genital herpes is caused by herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV 2). However, it can be caused by HSV 1, which is typically associated by oral herpes infections.

If you want to be sure, you can ask your doctor, or you can ask for your medical records. In the United States, by law, they have to give you your records upon request. However, they may charge you a fee for the request.

yes, there is a blood test to determine which type of herpes you have. The test results take about 2 weeks to come back.

good luck
Yes. You need to ask for a herpes select test and it can differentiate between types 1 and 2. Also if you have another breakout you can go to the doctor within 24 hours and have them culture it type specific.
Herpes simplex virus 1 is typically cold sores, while herpes simplex 2 is typically genital herpes. I say typically, because both can cause both kinds.

About 30% of people with genital herpes got it from cold sores (like someone giving them oral sex). So it is definitely possible for you to have got it this way. Since you have it in your genital area, it is considered genital herpes, even if it was caused by cold sores. There is only one kind of genital herpes (herpes simplex virus 2).

Hope that answered your question!
