If someone has a cold sore on their lip...can that cause genital herpes?? If a person has cold sores that doesn't mean they will develop genital herpes, but, they can pass it to someone else, which can cause genital herpes for that person. Cold sores and genital herpes are two different strains of the herpes virus. They are both herpes, but they affect different areas. If a person has cold sores that doesn't mean they have genital herpes and vice versa. I have personally had genital herpes for over 5 years and I have never had cold sores. If a person does have cold sores though, it is possible for them to spread it to another person by kissing them on the lips (which would cause cold sores) or giving them oral sex (which could cause genital herpes). Both herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 can cause genital herpes and cold sores. Typically herpes simplex virus 1 is cold sores while herpes simplex virus 2 is genital herpes. Cold sores can also be brought on by stress and citrus. |
