If I got shingles once as a child, which is a form of Herpes does that mean that I have the genital herpes...? |

I'm not sure if any tests were done at the time or if the doctor just gave this diagnosis, but (I was 3 or 4 and don't remember a bit of it)my mom tells me that I had shingles on my back, which is a form of herpes. I have never had another outbreak of shingles, nor have i ever had any symptoms of genital herpesor facial cold sores, in fact this was the only incidence of my life. But if the doctor gave a correct diagnosis, does that mean I have a herpes virus dormant in my body, and knowing the behaviors of viruses, does that mean it could mutate into another form and effect me otherwise? Shingles is a localized infection due to the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. It occurs only in people who have had chickenpox in the past and represents a reactivation of the dormant varicella virus. Why the virus reactivates in some individuals and not in others is unknown.A person must have already had chickenpox in the past to develop shingles. Contact with an infected individual does not cause another person's dormant virus to reactivate. However, the virus from a shingles patient may cause chickenpox in someone who has not had it before.Shingles is not usually dangerous to healthy individuals although it can cause great misery during an attack. Anyone with shingles on the upper half of their face, no matter how mild, should seek medical care at once. There is some danger that the virus could cause damage to the eye resulting in blindness. Complications are rare but may include partial facial paralysis (usually temporary), ear damage or encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). Chickenpox must be prevented in order to prevent shingles. Shingles is a form of Herpes (as is chicken pox, they are the same form) but they are a different form than both genital herpes or the herpes that causes cold sores. Don't worry too much ... you and about 90 percent of the global population share this form of herpes. And while shingles can be very painful, that is the worst that will ever come of this infection. Are you sure it wasn't just Chickenpox? Shingles is caused by a reactivation of the dormant virus in the nerves of people who have previously had chickenpox. As a result shingles can unfortunately occur more than once. You may have further attacks of shingles, especially at times when you are run down. These attacks may affect a different part of the body. Herpes virus are two types Herpes simplex Herpes zoster. If you have shingles it is cause by the herpes zoster virus. It does not cause genital herpes. Genital herpes is caused by herpes simplex virus. You cannot get that with a herpes zoster infection. So, as far as you take universal sexual precautions, you will not have genital herpes. God lord...no...of course not...relax.....however, shingles, also known as herpes zoster, can affect you gain. And if you got it a a child, it is known for s ur ethat you got chicken pox once in your life too. relax. go to Webmd...that's my favorite site...this guy I work with just got diagnosed with shingles. |
