If you have a cold sore on your mouth can you give your self genital herpes on accident?


like from touching it and than touching genitals. serious answers.

No, it is actually a different strain. However I have heard it is possible to give it the other way around. The first part is true the second I heard, but not sure where.

the cold sore is contagious. if you touch the ulcer and then touch any surface, another person can get herpes. you can spread it to another part of your body very easily -especially sites such as genitals, nose, and eyes.
wash your hands, don't touch the ulcer, and see a doctor for meds to treat the sore.

I get cold sores all the time and I am such a freak about washing my hands ALL the time cuz I am afraid if I touch myself like wiping after using the restroom i will get herpes down there.
The answers here are confused. HSV1 is the virus that causes cold sores. HSV2 is the virus that causes genital herpes. However you can "get" HSV 1 on your genitals (think oral sex) or HSV2 on your mouth (oral sex again). You could also spread it on your hand
