You're old enough to know that the only answers to your queries that matter are those provided by your health care team. And I'm enough of a nurse - and a fellow diabetic - to know that glaucoma is not often identified as a complication of diabetes. You're also awfully young to have developed severe complications, especially if, as you say, you've managed to keep your bg well under control. That's why I wonder if you've carefully listened to your doctor(s) and whether you've been entirely correct about your bg control issues.
Surgery is only appropriate in acute narrow-angle glaucoma. Less severe cases can be managed perfectly well with medications. Otherwise, you need to keep on keeping on with the bg control. It's a killer disease, but it's worst effects can usually be put off for decades. You have my best wishes - this damn disease isn't one either of us would wish on others, fer sure!

A short answer to your question is YES. However, allow me to explain briefly.
All treatment for glaucoma is designed to reduce the level of intraocular pressure to a point at which further damage to the optic nerve is prevented. The loss of vision in glaucoma is permanent, but with early treatment, the damage to vision can be minimised. (It is interesting to note that the potential association between diabetes and primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) has been studied by many groups, with most studies supporting a weak association between the two diseases.) This reduction in the level of intraocular pressure is achieved by a variety of means including eye drops, tablets, laser treatments for glaucoma and surgery for glaucoma. Each has advantages and disadvantages and the choice of the glaucoma management regime best suited to an individual patient should be made as a collaborative decision involving the patient and the ophthalmologist.
I add a link with details of the surgical procedures.
