Can a fluorescent lightbulb directly cause eye problems such as glaucoma?

should i get some sort of tinted glass shield for it to cut down on the brightness?

No it does not cause glaucoma or anything else. Sorry, it is a matter or personal preference if you decide to get tinted glasses, but you should definitely get glasses with UV protection.
