Does glaucoma affect 2 month old babies? |
how soon is it detected and is there a a need for surgery, emergency or otherwise? Sure it does.. some babies are even affected at birth.. and in some cases it appears later on.. The incidence of childhood glaucoma is 1 in every 10,000 live births. Of these 60% are diagnosed by teh age of 6 months and 80% within the first year of life and the rest later on.. It affects both eyes (bilateral) in 70% of cases (reference is American Academy of Ophthalmology) Once it is discovered it necessitates immediate treatment.. (within days preferably).. treatment is surgical in the first place.. medications are usually not a right choice for childhood glaucoma.. as for surgical options, there are many.. but this is not the right place to discuss them i guess.. Anyway.. if you have any further questions u are welcome to contact me.. Source(s): I am an ophthalmologist.. |
