My son is 10 years old, and up until the last few months has had 20/20 vision, he started complaining of headaches, not able to see well. Today at his eye doctor appt the doctor said that though further testing has to be done, but that he is pretty sure that he has glaucoma. He said that his optic nerve in one eye is 55% larger and in the other eye it's 65% larger. He's had several exams in the past, this is the first that a problem has been seen. Could this really be glaucoma, is there anything else that it could be?? I would really appreciate some input! Thank You!!!!
It is hard to say wether it is Glaucoma or not, but I have had glaucoma from birth, so I can assure you that your son's condition can be stabilised if it is as mine has. I have had to visit the doctor at least twice a year, and my condition has been kept at optimum, using eye drops and at the ages of 9 and 12, I had operations to keep the pressure in my eyes as reduced as possible and did not need eye drops for a while. On thursday just gone I had another eye operation, which has gone very well. I have chosen not to drive as I do not want to put myself or others at risk, but your son should be able to drive, especially as the doctors seem to have caught it early on. Other than this, glaucoma has not stopped me living a perfectly good and happy life. I have a great job and am studying a degree at the moment. I have a house, and am settled down with a partner. I suggest that you do not worry about this at all. Glaucoma is a scary thing to be suddenly diagnosed with, but you must stay positive for your son's sake. I can assure you if it is glaucoma, everything will be fine. Just go to the medical exams frequently, and remember the golden rule - dont be afraid to ask. You must ask the doctors absolutely every question you can. They do hold the answers, even if it takes a while to find them out. Take care, and good luck If glaucoma is detected in the early stages, it is usually treated by eye drops which reduce the intraocular pressure. Both laser and conventional surgery are used to treat glaucoma depending on the type of glaucoma ..More details and information at http://eye-care.in/glaucoma.html...
