Is glaucoma a type of cancer? |
I overheard a person saying that he had glaucoma and that that was a type of cancer in the eye. Is this true? No, it's not cancer Overview Glaucoma, the second-leading cause of adult blindness in the United States after age-related macular degeneration, often results from intraocular pressure (fluid pressure within the eye, or IOP) that is too high for the optic nerve to tolerate. About 2.2 million Americans age 40 and over have glaucoma, and, because the condition does not cause symptoms in its early stages, half of them do not know it. Another 5 million to 10 million people are at increased risk for the disorder. Source(s): http://www.usnews.com/usnews/health/eye_... :) Nooooo.Fortunately it's something totally different I don't think so. I think is more to do with pressure building up and cutting off the optic nerve, causing blindness. If caught early it is easily treatable with medication. If you have a history of glaucoma you should get checked every year by your eye doctor. Are you sure your friend didn't say 'blastoma' or 'sarcoma'? Check out this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/glaucoma... no...diabetics get glaucoma...it can cause blindness no not a cancer! but i think it's linked to diabetes! NO NOT AT ALL! it is a problem witht the pressure in the eye, my son was born with a rare type of it. |
