Stupid Question but..Can I use Glaucoma Eye Drops if I don't have Glaucoma? What would happen if I did?

I am guessing you have heard that certain glaucoma meds can actually change your eye color and/or cause your eyelashes to grow in really thick. This is a side effect of the drops and not something they should be used for as a cosmetic benefit.

These drops are prescription drops for a reason. They treat a serious illnes that can ultimately cause blindness. These drops can intereact with other medications causing serious complications. That is why you hear or read on labels to notify your doctor if you have glaucoma prior to starting any new medications.

What would happen if you used them anyway? Taken in conjuction with the wrong medications they could cause a heart attack or lower your eye pressure so low that your retina could be damaged. That is just for starters.

You can buy store brand saline drops, if your eyes are dry. They're cheap too.
Why would you want to? Some of these drops sting and burn and often cause redness but are worth the discomfort if a person has glaucoma and is trying to save his vision.

If you have dry eyes, try Natural Tears or saline drops which are soothing and refreshing. Avoid those that promise to "get the red out". They constrict the blood vessels and deprive the cornea of oxygen.

If you have allergies that affect your eyes try Opticon which will lessen the effect of allergens like pollen and dust in the air.

Never use anyone else's prescription eye drops or any other person's eye drops period. There is always the danger of catching an eye infection this way. Also, never touch the tip of the dispenser with your fingers or to your eyelashes. Keep it as clean as possible. Keep it in the refrigerator once it is opened to prevent bacterial growth. This can also make it more refreshing to use. Hope this helps.
