I'm 27, white, and long sighted. why are my eye pressures 25 and 27 with cause of onset of glaucoma? |
i went to the optition before christmas thinking my lenses needed altering. my optition was in shock when he got the inoccular readings back for my eyes. 25 in right and 27 in left. ive been referred to eye hospital, still waiting for the date. problem is, where ever i look for info i find im not in any of the groups of people that this can affect. its worrying me like mad because i don t know why or how this has happened. all i know is pressure readings over 20 is cause for concern. can someone help me answer this please? There is often a family trait when it begins as young as this. Don't worry - it can easily be brought under control with eyedrops and you should never notice any real difference in your sight. You should be careful in future though, when taking any medication, as some - particularly decongestants and cough medicines - should not be used by glaucoma patients as they can increase ocular pressure. Other than that, and remembering to put your drops in nightly , it should be life as normal, so please don't upset yourself! These readings are a little high but certainly not extreme. Some people - and you may even be one- live all their lives with elevated pressures because that is the norm for them and therefore they will need no medication at all. Hope this has put your mind at rest. The deciding factor in your case is visual field analysis. A visual field test is performed to check for glaucomatous blind spots. Did you have this done at the opticians? If you have any glaucomatous blind spots, you will be treated appropriately, probably with eye drops. There are so many factors that affect eye pressure. They vary from day to day and throughout the day. Try not to worry, it would be very unlikely for someone of your age to develop glaucoma. If you do have it, you are fortunate that it has been detected so that it can be controlled. There has been research about genetic tendancies to glaucoma which confirmed the link. Some people just get it for "unknown reason". My friends daughter has it, shes just 22 and they dont know why. Shes being treated with good effect; |
