Hello All, Is there anyone out there that would be kind enough to tell me in layman's terms about Glaucoma, |
I was diagnosed with mild Glaucoma about 5 years ago.I recently had a eye check-up to renew my reading glasss,I have been refered to a specialist at the eye hospital as the pressure in my left eye s 25 and 22 in my right. I sometimes have blurred vision and floating dots and most recently it seems like things things move very slighty to adjust my vision (if that makes sence) also i have pain at the top and behind my eyes and headaches constantly.and sometimes it seems like there is a colour surrounding something i am looking at,and my eyes seem itchy. I would be so very grateful if someone could advise me about this Glaucoma so i can understand it. I have read on the internet it can in some cases cause blindness and this terrifies me. ty Kind regards Karen It is caused by high blood pressure behind the eyeballs. This pressure on your optic nerves causes headaches and usually a ghosting effect; if you look at a lit light bulb you may see an extra outline around it. It can lead to blindness but if caught early - like yours - it is totally treatable Don't worry and sleep well and follow the hospital's instructions. Good luck Go to NHD direct and read all about it. I'm no expert but this has been a story line on Eastenders lately. I think the gist is that yes it can cause blindness if not treated. However it sounds like your case is being well tracked and the fact that you have now been referred to a specialist is a good thing. I reiterate it usually only causes blindness when not found early enough. WebMD.com is pretty good and easy. Glaucoma is caused by passages in your eye becoming blocked causing pressure to build up in your eye, this then damages the nerve fibers,The cause of the blockage is unknown,it cant be cured but if caught early enough it can be controlled, you should have been given drops to put in your eyes everyday.Left untreated you will go blind. Ask your doctor about treatment and anything you dont understand, thats what he is paid for. Best of luck http://www.aoa.org/x4709.xml Angle-closure glaucoma is glaucoma associated with a closed anterior chamber angle, which may be chronic or, rarely, acute. Symptoms of acute angle closure are severe ocular (pertaining to the eye) pain and redness, decreased vision, colored halos, headache, nausea, and vomiting. Intraocular pressure is elevated. Immediate treatment of the acute condition with multiple topical and systemic drugs is required to prevent permanent visual loss, followed by definitive iridotomy (an incision into the iris). Primary open-angle glaucoma is a syndrome of optic nerve damage associated with an open anterior (the front surface of) chamber angle and an elevated or sometimes average intraocular pressure (IOP). Symptoms occur late and involve visual field loss. Diagnosis is by funduscopy, gonioscopy, visual field examination, and measurement of IOP. Treatment includes topical 尾-blockers, prostaglandin analogs and other drugs, and sometimes surgical drainage.
