If HIV attacks your immune system, how come?


If HIV attacks your immune system, how come the preferred detection method is by detecting the presence of HIV antibodies? Wouldn't that indicate that your immune system is fighting off the disease?

because your immune system can't last forever. Do you know how this works? Helper T cells detect the pathogen, B cells produce the antibodies to disable or kill the pathogen, and T cells consume the pathogen. A pathogen is a foreign invader. HIV kills your helper T cells. At first, your body is winning, because there is a lot less HIV than helper T cells. Eventually though, after like 30 years, HIV begins to win, and when its winning, your body becomes unable to detect foreign invaders, because of its lack of helper T cells. So, if there's HIV antibodies, then yes, your body is fighting off the disease. But its fighting a fight that it can't win.
