What is the percentage of black women living with hiv/aids in the u.s.? |
i am doing a paper on the lives of men on the down low and the high rate of heterosexual women who have contacted the diesease through sex with them. i am just looking for some facts. African American communities are being ravaged and attacked by an epidemic of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). At issue is our lifestyle. Although a number of AIDS cases can be attributed to Injection Drug Use (IDU), too many of us 鈥?whether gay, straight, male or female 鈥?continue to have unprotected sex with multiple partners or people we barely know. The AIDS rate among Black women is three times as high as that among Latino women and 18 times as high as that among White women. Today Black women make up more than half of all women who have died of AIDS. African Americans make up 13 percent of the population, yet we now account for 41 percent of all AIDS cases in the United States. The Harvard AIDS Institute estimates that in the year 2000 more than half of all our country鈥檚 AIDS cases will be within the African American community. Source(s): http://www.blackwomenshealth.com/hiv_aid... http://blackvoices.aol.com/black_lifesty... African Americans account for a growing share of AIDS diagnoses over time, rising from 25% of cases diagnosed in 1985 to 49% in 2004. 鈥?A recent analysis of 1999鈥?002 data from a national household survey found that 2.2% of African Americans in the U.S. were HIV positive, higher than other groups and the only group for which prevalence increased significantly over time. 鈥?Estimated AIDS prevalence among African Americans increased by 35% between 2000 and 2004, compared to a 22% increase among whites. 鈥?Deaths among African Americans with AIDS declined by 7% between 2000 and 2004, compared to a 19% decline among whites over this period. 鈥?African American women account for the far majority of new AIDS cases among women (67% in 2004); white women account for 17% and Latinas 15%. 鈥?Among African Americans, African American women represent more than a third (36%) of AIDS cases diagnosed in 2004; by comparison, white women represented 16% of AIDS cases diagnosed among whites in 2004. 鈥?Although African American teens (ages 13鈥?9) represent only 15% of U.S. teenagers, they accounted for 66% of new AIDS cases reported among teens in 2003.13 A similar impact can be seen among African American children. http://www.blackaids.org/ http://www.kff.org/hivaids/6089.cfm... not only African Americans. everybody can get it, if they do not Proctect themselves when having sex. few man who get released from prison has been into a down low with another mans. they come home with their wives and give their wives aids nor HIV. |
