Info on HPV?

i found a little bump on my vagina but i thought it was from shaving, but still went to the doctors and check it she said everything cam out normal. negative. but then i found more bumps very tiny but this time they were inside. i called my doctor and told her its getting bad. she told me that the test actually weren't clear and to get a 2nd test. (i'm so pissed at this ***** that was not right or her.)
so i went to the PPHood. and the gyn said that he thinks i have HPV. but he said that i would have to wait like 2 weeks to know what it is for sure....can i just go on his jugement, wher he thinks it may be Hpv not herpes cause of the look or the bumps. i know its not STD's. but what i mean is can it be just a women thing and maybe its really just from shaving or something other then that. i need hope. but i'm also trying to be real. its hard. to believe something like this.

OK- this is my second HPV question of the night. First, don't panic! you're question is awfully long and rambling and it makes me think you're a little bit scared... don't be, and here's why:

1. First of all HPV is an STD... if you've never had any kind of skin to skin contact with your genital area and another person's, then you can be confident that you don't have this virus. If you have, even with a condom, then I'm sorry you cannot be confident that you don't have an STD.

2. HPV is the most common STD. There are some statistics that say up to 75% of the reprouctive population has or had HPV. that's 3 out of four people! chances are that if you're sexually active, you've been exposed to HPV

3. (and here's the good news): even though there are over 100 strains of HPV, most of them cause no symptoms and do not affect your health. In fact, in 90% of cases, the body supresses HPV 2 years after onset of infection. Some strains however are precursors to cervical cancer, and this is why the virus is a serious one. There is a new vaccine out now that protects against 4 of the HPV strains that may lead to cervical cancer... I recommend you talk to your gyno about it.

4. it is entirely possible, if you are sexually active, that you have HPV. do not let this stop you from living your life. even if you used a condom in the past, HPV can still be transmitted.

5. There is no FDA approved HPV test for men... other than looking. If you do have HPV, the person you got it from (if he is male) probably doesn't even know that he's a carrier.

Don't panic about this! remember, if you are positive, you are not a lone STD carrying outcast... most women (and men) share this virus! I am positive for HPV (I got it from my husband) and he didn't know he had it! I am one of the unlucky ones whose strain is a cancer causing variety, but I have no genital warts or visible symptoms. When I was first diagnosed through a pap smear, I had some unusal tissue that was detected near my cervix. I had to have cryo surgery, where the tissue was frozen off (like a doctor freezes of a wart on your hand). I was fully awake for this and it was not the least bit painful. I have pap smears every year, and we always check for unusual tissue, but I haven't had to have cryo surgery since (this was 6 years ago). I also got the HPV vaccine, to protect me against the other strains.

so don't feel alone, even if you are positive, this doesn't make you a bad person. and it is virus, but its not the worst thing that could happen to you! this is a STD that's easy to cope with and live with. you're life can still be totally normal! don't live in fear of this virus! I know this is cliched, but in this case, knowledge is power!

good luck!

Just wait for the tests. If it is hpv, some strains can be cleared by a womans body. Your own immune system can clear it out. You'll never know until the tests come back.

Ok hun...I'm no Vagina doctor...but I have listened to a radio station for the last like 2 years go to this link...www.lovelineshow.com they talk about HPV a lot...it's very serious which you probably already know...and if not treated can cause cervical cancer...so I would NOT go on his judgment only because of the sudden outbreaks...ever had Herpes by the way??? Or your man (or women) has he (or her) on their mouth??? I'd look into those questions to see

Well if it is HPV you may not be able to find out just yet. HPV is a virus. So it can stay dormat in your body for days to years..you could have gotten the first time you ever had sex and not known it. But in most case of younger woman her immune system will fight off the virus. As you know HPV can cause cervical cancer. There are high risk and low risk, they have shots to help prevent low risk but not high, but the shots still help and you will have to get pap smears every 6 months to a year. Sometimes HPV can cause moderate to severe warts on the inside and outside of the vagina and penis if this happens you'll have to start using creams.

Hi Jarleen. First is the issue of your disappointment in your first doctor's opinion. You said that your bump was on your vagina. But the vagina is inside of you. Then you said that you noticed more tiny bumps inside (vagina?). OK...If in fact those little bumps are really tina as you say, it would be difficult for your doctor to tell you for sure what that first one was. Yes, she should have told you that the test was indeterminate when it came in. They other thing is that education is missing here. I say this becasue you talk about HSV and HPV as possibilities and then say that you are confident that you don't have an STD. Both of these viruses are STDs. Both viruses can cause big problems for the female. Where as HSV can become recurrent in outbreaks of the genital skin and mucous membrane and can be transferred to a baby at birth, HPV is more complicated. HPV has many sub-types. While some can manifest as outside skin warts others can manifest their presence on inner mucous membrane of the vagina. Then others can be silent, but deadly in terms of cervical dysplasia and later dissiminated cancer.

There is no treatment to kill both HSV and HPV. Their are antiviral Rxs to supress the HSV; therefore, reduce skin and mucous membrane outbreaks. There is a new vaccine for women to provide 85% protection of contracting the cancer producing HPVs. Once a person is invaded by either viruses, there is no killing of these viruses at this point. Only bacterial STDs can be completely cured (killed) by antibiotics; e.g. chlamydia, gonnorhea. And yeast overgrowth can be suppressed by antifungal Rxs.

Have a safe journey!
