I am a widow that wrote in this morning about testing positive for hpv with an abnormal pap test.?

I guess I didn't explain exactly what I needed to know. I asked my primary care doctor and my gyno. They both refuse to commit to a real anwswer. I need to know since my pap tests and hpv test have been normal up until last month, could I have caught it from my boyfriend in the last year? I have been sleeping with him for about 3 years. Is it likely for me to be infected just this year? Why not before that? Last year is the time that I believe he slept with someone else. Thank you.

There is no way to tell for sure. The virus can be in your body for years before it starts to show up. You also be have been spreading this around to other people. You need to tell your boyfriend (if you have not already) so he can go and get tested.

The doctor that I talked to about it. (I have HPV also) She said that there is no way in determining where you got it from. It can stay dorment in your body for a long time just like HIV. A guy also could have it and not know about it either. Guys generally don't get symptoms unless you have one of the strains that cause warts.

Yes and no, HPV can cause cervical cancer and abnormal paps. Since you have never even tested positive in the past, it is possible that your boyfriend did spread it to you. However, most men and women end up with this after having a few sexual partners. It is always possible that it had gone undectected before b/c you had no abnormal cells. Since HPV is a virus, it can go undetected for long periods of time and then turn cells abnormal after many years. So, you could have contracted it long ago also. The only for sure way to be safe is to have your boyfriend tested to insure if you passed HPV to him or if he passed HPV to you that he tests to see if he is positive so he doesn't pass to anyone else.

you could have gotten it at anytime and not even known it. if you had a positive test, then that means you were having an active outbreak. since the type of test that they gave you only comes up positive while it is active. which means you could have had it for years. having such light symptoms with each out break you never even noticed it. now, some people feel the outbreak and some don't. and statistically the first one will hurt more. and happens about 2-4 weeks after exposure. so in theory,... if you feel this one,.. i would come to think it is your first one, and there for the BF cheated. but if it feels like any other day, i would guess you have it so mild that this is not the first one, and there for who knows how long you have had it or where you got it from.

It is absolutely possible that that he was exposed to this virus a year ago and then, in the next year, infected you. If you get annual paps, then the opportunity to discover the presence of the virus comes only once a year. In addition, the virus shows up on a pap often at the six month mark, post exposure. Dr.s don't want to say that your boyfriend gave this to you in the last year because then they could go after him, literally or in court. It could also quite possibly be that he has had this since long before he met you, and in the last year, if your immune system was compromised due to a cold, the flu or an infection, you were suddenly more vulnerable to it. The statistics on how many people carry it are huge and my doc counsels me not either feel bad about it nor blame anyone for carrying it. It is not proof that he cheated on you or that he did not. I wish you health and peace.
