I'm 25, sexually active (only with my husband) and have a 4 year old son, am I eligible for the hpv shot?

Just wondering about the requirements. I know the cut off age is 26, but can you have kids and still get it?

Also, I don't have insurance, so I can't ask my doctor.

I have a lot of cancer in my family history, so that's why I want it. Anything to prevent it.

Don't believe the hype about the HPV shot. This is nothing more than the drug companies trying to dupe the public into getting vaccinated. This is a classic case of the drug companies manipulating the government (FDA) in order to make $$'s at the publics expense. If you've never really delved into the subject, you might be resistent to believe that the drug companies are NOT looking out for your best interest or health. They are in business to make money, lots of it, and they won't hesitate to twist the data in order to get their drugs approved and pushed. But in many cases, the drug companies push out drugs and push for approval of new drugs that don't really provide any true health benefits. In many cases, they make things even worse.

HPV is a group of more than 100 viruses, about 30 of which are said to be linked to cervical cancer. The HPV vaccine only helps in prevention of two of the viruses, albeit the two most closely linked with cervical cancer. However, the direct linkage between HPV and cervical cancer is still highly debateable.

As quoted in USA Today: "Spread by skin-to-skin contact, HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the USA, but more than 90% of cases clear up on their own...Though cervical cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide, it is rare in the USA, thanks largely to widespread screening with the Pap test. Most U.S. women who develop cervical cancer never had a Pap test, says Debbie Saslow, director of breast and gynecological cancers at the American Cancer Society."

Taking a drug (in this case via a shot) is not the answer. Don't be scared into getting an unnessecary vaccine.

Yes you can get the HPV shot. My doctor told me that if my insurance doesn't cover it, I would have to pay about $400 per shot! They do have payment options though.

You should still be eligible for the shot. Since you don't have insurance, I suggest contacting your local Planned Parenthood office or health department.

Does your husband cheat on you? Does he have HPV? If you answered no to these questions, you probably don't need to even get it.

You can still have kids and get the shot and mostly the cut off age is 26 because usually people don't have as many partners after than. BTW, the shot is really expensive, like $400, so without insurance, I bet that is too much for something that you might not even need.

you should be good for now but then again it's still always up to your care provider. Generally ins. covers most preventive treatments, im 24 and had no problem getting the shot. i also think it's great that your thinking about it, it can really save lifes if we all get it done. good luck

You should be eligible for the shot but be careful. No long term studies have been done on it and there's no saying whether or not it prevents later pregnancy or how long the shot lasts before you need more boosters. Some girls have even died from the HPV vaccine. While it's nice to think that yes, it might prevent cancer, it doesn't prevent all forms of cancer caused by HPV. There are 100 forms of HPV and the shot only works for 4 of those. Whether or not cervical cancer runs in your family may not have anything to do with the shot since that is from genetic predisposition and not from being exposed to a virus. Just research it and make an informed decision.

I wouldn't get it even if I were in the age range.

Its too new, no long term studies have been done, it is NOT 100% effective in preventing cervical cancer, it only possibly prevents FOUR of the over 100 forms of cervical cancer, and it contains carcinogens, which CAUSE cancer!
