If i get the hpv shot do i have to have a pap smear?

If i get the hpv shot do i have to have a pap smear?

If you are asking "is a pap test a requirement to get the HPV vaccine?" the answer is no. The ideal time to get the vaccine is before any exposure to HPV--before you ever have sex. That's why it's approved for girls as young as 9.

However, if you are asking,"If I have had the HPV vaccine, will I still need regular pap tests?" the answer is yes. The vaccine protects you against the two strains of HPV that cause 70% of all cervical cancers. Right now, there's not enough evidence that you are protected against the other strains. Furthermore, if you had sex before you were vaccinated, you could have already been exposed.

Pap tests are recommended starting at age 21 or THREE YEARS AFTER first vaginal sexual intercourse. The HPV vaccine is recommended for girls and women age 9-26 and should ideally be given long before any sexual contact. Therefore, ideally there should be many years between when you get the HPV vaccine and when you get your first pap test.

defo - as it doesn't just look for HPV - it looks for a number of things such as cell changes.

You have to have smears.

Nope you don't have to. They give these shots to girls as young as 9. You only have to have a pap smear if you are sexually active or would like to recive birth control. So that person up there who said defo well they don't know what they are talking about.

uhm not necessarily. you only need a pap smear if your looking for stds i had one and i didnt get the hpv shot. so u wont get one unless you request it. but i would if i was you if u already had sex. dont worry it doesnt hurt at all actually you cant feel realy anythingthey lube it up allot and just crank it about an inch open. not bad at all. then get a q tip and well... you know

YES, you STILL need to have pap smears because the HPV shot is not 100% effective!

You NEED pap smears, no matter if you get this 'vaccine' or not. It is not 100% proven to work, and it only protects against FOUR of the OVER ONE HUNDRED forms of cervical cancer.

Yes. A pap smear checks for irregular cells on your cervix, which are not always caused by HPV.

No, you just go into the office and get them (there are three) the first one hurts a bit though

The HPV shot (Gardasil) only prevents two high risk HPV types 16 and 18

They are 13+ high risk HPV types that can affect the cervix and still cause cancers of the cervix.

So you yes will still need to have Pap smears as recommended by your doctor.
