Should I get the HPV vaccine, in this situation? |
I'm getting married in a little over 4 months. First, that's not really enough time to get the vaccine anyways since it's supposed to be 3 shots over 6 months. I do NOT like the idea of a vaccine whose long term side effects can't be known yet. I'm really healthy, and I'm 21. I recently heard that half of sexually active people have HPV. Chances are good that your fiance has it, and doesn't even know. Why not get the vaccine? Even if it's not 100%, it's better than nothing. A friend of mine had a complete hysterectomy before the age of 30, due to cervical cancer. Her husband was her only partner. You should get it. Anyone who has not had sex should get the HPV shot, end of story. do it just in case. I had the hpv vaccine and i'm glad i did. hpv is sneaky, there are many strains of it, and it can prevent ovarian cancer. i would get it if i were you ' I am a doctor and I cannot recommend this vaccination. The relationship between advantages and side effects is too bad. In reality it is a big business only. my love you worry too much... if he used protection and has been tested he is more than likely clean ... if however you want to get he vaccination to be super safe than go for it... Yes, you really should do it. It protects against several strains of cervical cancer and has been tested many, many times before going out on the market. Usually higher risks of HPV occur to those who are sexually active- more than others. As long as you're both clean (or he is cuz ur a virgin) I wouldn't worry about it. HPV is preventable in other ways then some shot that we don't really know all that much about yet. I wouldn't risk it. I am not a doctor but I have done alot of research on the vaccine and have gotten all 3 shots myself. I HIGHLY recommend getting it. You don't have to wait til the 3rd shot to consummate your marriage but getting it in general is a very good idea, in my opinion He could also fool around later and bring it home to you. You may not be married forever (this happens to people). You are young, you have a long life ahead of you, may as well get vaccinated now. I haven't heard of side effects any more serious than injection site redness and itching, and slight fever. Im 14, and I got this shot. I definatly think it is worth getting because it protects you from cervical cancer and getting certain STDs. I got my last dose about six months ago. I haven't had anything bad in my health relating to the shots. If doctors are giving it to their patients it is a safe vaccine to have. First of all I congratulate you for keeping yourself for your husband to be. Secondly, I think that if in your state you all have testing before marriage, then you should take advantage of it. Thirdly, you say your fiance is clean. If that is the case, then trust the man. would that stop you from marrying him? I wouldn't do it, well I'm too old anyway. But I don't feel the studies are lengthy enough for it to be considered 'safe'. If you get pap smears done regularly they'll see it if you have it. If your so concerned why dont you get the first two shots and use condoms for two months until you get the other shot. Since your a Virgin using a condom wont matter because you have nothing to compare it to I got the shots even though im not sexually active just to make sure. If you think this could be a problem for you then you should ask your doctors about the pros and cons....i mean in the long run its really a choice of not getting the shot and getting HPV(possibly) or getting the shot and have side effects not yet found out. I got the shot a year and a half ago and so far i have had no regrets. There are 13 forms of HPV not all can cause cancer. When you get a PAP smear if there are cancerous cells, then most likely you have HPV and you will get treated to solve the problem.... If YOU get tested for HPV and get a PAP... even if you do have HPV as long as your PAP is normal, there is nothing to do/worry about... there's nothing they CAN do. Its only bad if it causes cancerous cells... I think that if you are a virgin, you should wear a condom anyway, and he could also have something else. ex: HIV,AIDS, herpes, hepititas with no symptoms either. He could have came in contact with it in others ways besides sex. Im not trying to make him out to be a bad guy or anything, just telling you to take care of you. There are two types of HPV, low risk and high risk. Low risk is genital warts and high risk could cause cervical cancer. This is the most spread virus. Just take care of yourself and do it the right way at first, you can always drop the condoms later. Hope this helps and good luck! Since no vaccine is 100% safe and reliable, I would not recommend you getting it quite yet. And since you are entering into a monogomus relationship then all should be fine. In the future, if either of you become symptomatic, then go to MD and get checked out! Good Luck...:O) Read the website, it has a lot of information. As far as the risks go, I would ask your doctor about the long term affects of this vaccine and if you would make a good candidate. I'm not an expert or a doctor but I have done research because I have had two of three Gardasil shots. I decided to get this vaccination because one of my close friends had HPV, which led to cervical cancer. There are many different strains of HPV but very few are harmful. Most strains are harmless, don't cause any kind of damage or pain, and eventually go away. The harmful strains cause either warts or cervical cancer (depending on the strain). I would discuss the vaccination with your doctor and possible side effects that could occur. He/she should make you feel alot better about recieving the shot. Also personaly, I haven't noticed any side effects. I would rather be safe than sorry! I hope this helps. yes |
