Does the HPV vaccine give permanent immunity?

Or what? Or does it last for ten years?

This is a tricky question. The answer is Yes, it does give permanent immunity BUT only to those few strains of HPV. There are nearly 200 strains of HPV known at this time. Therefore, The protection offered by the vaccines is incomplete. There are roughly 15 types of the HPV virus that can cause cervical cancer. Gardasil is designed to protect against two types of the virus that are responsible for 70 percent of all cervical cancers. However, they cannot fully protect women against the remaining 30 percent of cervical cancers that are caused by other "high-risk" types of HPV.
The vaccines cannot protect everyone. HPV is transmitted through intimate (sexual) skin-to-skin contact. Thus, to be fully effective, current research suggests that the vaccine should be given before girls become sexually active. In other words, the ideal time to get the vaccine is during adolescence. (The FDA has approved use of Gardasil in girls and young women age 9-26. However, the agency also stated that "females are not protected if they have been infected with [the targeted] HPV types prior to vaccination, indicating the importance of immunization before potential exposure to the virus" - in other words, prior to a woman's first sexual relationship.)
There are a lot of unknowns. For example, it is not known whether a "booster" vaccine shot will be needed later in life to ensure continued protection.

With that said, it is still a highly recommended vaccination that has the potential to drastically decrease cervical cancer as well as the number of individuals affected by the disease.

maybe u should ask ya doctor

no since it is a virus it is ever evolving virus adapt and change you need to check with your doctor yearly to see if there is another one plus if you want to have kids ever or again do that instead of the vaccine

I can't really promise you a correct answer, but It proebly will for THAT virus. It is only a vaccine for a few versions for HPV. It's still possible to get HPV, but not those strains. If you want more information talk to your doctor or search on wikipedia.org.

It should last a lifetime.why else would you get immunized. They have done a study and it works on boys as well. It is double protection for us.

Vaccines give permanent immunity, but the HPV Vaccine is only for certian strains, so you should still get checked for HPV regularly.

The vaccine only gives immuneity to that specific "strain" of any virus. If the virus mutates into a new virus, then another "vaccine" is needed. We can't cross immune to various strains of viruses. Wish we could though. You develop antibodies with a specific vaccine to a specific virus during your lifetime, but may need booster shots to help, like chickenpox for example. Anyone can jump in here and finish this off and/or correct me if I am incorrect on this issue. TY/JM-RN

It's still too early to say.

It's been proven to provide immunity to the four types of HPV it protects against (types 6, 11, 16 and 18) for at least 5 years, but there needs to be further research to say if, or at what stage, a booster might be needed.
