Can HPV go away on its own?

Three years ago I asked my Doctor to test me for HPV because my then boyfriend had genital warts and didn't tell me until the condom broke. The first test can back negative. Then he sent me a second letter thirty days later that said I was positive. I went to see him a few months after that and he said that I had developed an immunity to HPV strains that cause warts because at some point I contracted strain 16 or 18.

I considered myself a carrier and told all partners that I was a carrier.

I went for my annual last month with a new doctor. She suggested I get the vaccine. I also asked her to run the HPV test again and this time it came back negative.

Can HPV completely clear it self? Did I have a false negative or false positive? Or is one of these doctors lying to me?

I never had warts. I had strain 16 or 18 the type that cause cancer. I was specifically clear for the strain that causes warts.

The answer relies on your doctor. You should ask if tests like these fail. It is a great possibility that these tests are not 100% accurate.

This is a really tough question. I personally think it may depend on the type of HPV you have.

I was diagnosed with HPV when I was 20. I had abnormal paps until I was 39. When the gyn told me that my pap was normal, I had them repeat it, but it still came up clean.

So ... maybe it does go into remission. I don't know for sure, but I'd press your GYN about it for answers - a lot has changed in the past few years.

There is no "cure" for HPV infection, although in most women the infection goes away on its own. The treatments provided are directed to the changes in the skin or mucous membrane caused by HPV infection, such as warts and pre-cancerous changes in the cervix.

The best way to know is getting the results through a blood test. Vaginal paps may sometimes be inconclusive.

a virus will live in your body forever. the symptoms may go away but the virus wont. (like mono) not sure if it is harmful or not.
