Unusual HPV/Genital Wart Situation - Spreading to girlfriend & How I got it?

I have been with my gf since 5/06&have not had outside sexual contact with anyone&prior to her,my last partner was 2/06. Before that, 10/03. In 11/07,I noticed a bump on the opening of my urethra, initially dismissing it.I then noticed other bumps on the penis, but also thought they were perhaps just skin tags/hair follicles. In 1/08,I started to get worried that this was not healing and went to see a urologist, who said it was very likely a case of HPV/genital warts.2 weeks ago,I had the bumps removed and sent for biopsy, confirming the diagnosis. My gf then went to her gynecologist. Her last pap was 9/07&"normal." She had the more accurate HPV DNA test performed last week, and yesterday received a call saying it was negative. We have had sex since 11/07 when this started,so I don't understand how she's negative, without having received the vaccine. Now I'm being accused of cheating and this is all is VERY hurtful.Someone help me understand this virus,I don't even get how I was infected :-(

Believe me I'm thrilled for her, and she is going to get the vaccine. I really hope she can get over this, to be accused like this and know you're innocent and unable to prove it is one of the worst feelings I have ever had to experience. How I got it, honestly, remains a mystery to me and is bothering me to a great degree - I guess I could have had this since as far back as 2003 and not realized it.

Your mother could have passed it to you during birth, and people can go their entire lives with the hpv virus on board and never have a wart themselves.
She may have it, but is not showing up positive yet, or you were not shedding the virus until 11/07. Have you been using condoms as well? That could explain her being negative as well. Good for both of you, if you were!
If you have been using those with a nonoxyl 9 spermicide, studies are coming out that it may help block HPV

and here for info about HPV in general. She needs to get the vaccine asap, though.

Please try not to take her confusion and anger to heart right now. She is as scared and confused as you are. She also does not understand the virus and is jumping to the first and easiest conclusion. I am sure this is just one more stress for you (being accused of cheating) right now that you just do not need.
Honestly, I would go to the website I gave you with her and have an open discussion with her. Then I would have her come to your next appointment with you so she can ask your doctor everything she needs to know about it. Hopefully then she can put her fears of infidelity to rest. Just keep assuring her that it is NOT the case and that you love her. Try empathy and tell you understand why she would fear that you cheated, but it simply is not the case. and yes, you could have been infected in 05 and just never showed any symptoms.
Here is another excellent website:

It can take many months for this virus to appear in wart form. I know a girl and it took 9 months for hers to show. She could still get it in the future,it just might now have shown up at this point. Some people can carry the virus and never develop warts. This could have been in your body dormant and just now came out. To be honest though, if I were in her shoes--I would probably think you cheated too. Go online and get info about the disease and discuss it with her. Also be aware you can pass it without an outbreak for the rest of your life. So, you need to be honest with any future partners.

Our FDA approved HPV does not screen for low risk HPV types. The test screens for 13 high risk HPV types. Most visible genital warts are due to low risk HPV types 6 or 11.

Your partner may have a low risk HPV type and never show a sign of a wart. Many people have an HPV type or two with no visiable signs and no symptoms. Any of your past partners could have carried the infection. HPV can show as warts in a few months or it might take years.

A single Pap may miss abnormal cell changes.

The hc2 High-Risk HPV DNA Test庐 (DNAwithPap鈩?* using Hybrid Capture庐 2 (hc2) technology is an In Vitro
nucleic acid hybridization assay with signal amplification using microplate chemiluminescence for the qualitative
detection of thirteen high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA in cervical specimens. The HPV types
detected by the assay are the high-risk HPV types 16/18/31/33/35/39/45/51/52/56/58/59/68. The hc2 High-Risk
HPV DNA Test cannot determine the specific HPV type present.

HPV is found in the mucous tissue lining of the cervix or in the tissue of skin. HPV is not diagnosed via blood test.

Genital HPV types are categorized according to their epidemiological association with cervical cancer. Infections with low-risk types, such as HPV types 6 and 11, can cause benign or low-grade changes in cells of the cervix, genital warts, and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis. High-risk HPV types can cause cervical, anal, and other genital cancers. High-risk HPV types are detected in 99% of cervical cancers,

Infections by low-risk papillomavirus types, such as human papillomavirus (HPV) type 6 (HPV-6) and HPV-11, induce benign genital warts that rarely progress to malignancy. In contrast, lesions induced by high-risk HPV types have the potential to progress to cancer.

How is HPV diagnosed?
There are no blood tests for HPV, but some tests can help your health care provider diagnose the infection.
HPV DNA test 鈥?Called DNAwithPap鈩? this test looks directly for the genetic material (DNA) of the HPV within a sample of cells. The test can detect the type of HPV connected to cervical cancer. The sample used for this test is generally removed at the same time as a Pap test

Condoms do not provide 100% protection from the transmission of HPV.

The HPV vaccine prevents low risk HPV types 6 and 11 and high risk HPV types 16 and 18. It is not a treatment for HPV types you already have and the vaccine may not be as effective for women who have already engaged in sex.
