LSIL's not caused by HPV? |
My pap smear showed LSIL's, but my HPV test came back negative. I went in for the biopsy, but now I have to wait 2 weeks for the results. Any idea what we're looking at here? I agree with the second person. Most doctors only test for high risk HPV because those are the most worrisome strains of the virus. However, you can still have low risk HPV, which is responsible for low grade cells. Most doctors do not worry about low risk HPV because it is rare for low risk HPV (~1% probability) to go on to become something more (like high grade or cancer). Most low grade lesions are cleared by your immune system within a year or two, even without doctor intervention. A doctor can even "clean up" your cervix if the infection doesn't go away. Your doctor may choose to just monitor the infection by repeat pap smears, or he/she may decide to clean up your cervix to get rid of the lesion. At any rate, you will be just fine. This type of infection is extremely common. I would wait for the results Usually Labs only test for the High Risk HPV's because those can lead to cervical cancer, you might be positive for one of the low risk types which are common for causing warts but can also make your cells have an atypical appereance. |
