I have a lot of HPV questions, help me clear them up!?

Ok, a couple weeks after I had PROTECTED sex with a guy I started having vaginal itching and a few tiny bumps that looked like taste-buds developed. I freaked out thinking that maybe it was herpes, but the pictures I've seen online look nothing like what I have. And what I have are not blisters, they are not fluid-filled. They only become real noticeable and inflamed when the itching starts up, which comes and goes every couple weeks. When I went to my Gyn for the first time a couple months ago, she didn't even notice the bumps and when I pointed them out to her she said they looked like the normal texture of skin down there. But they weren't there before! Anywho, a few weeks later I found out that my pap was abnormal and they made me an appointment for a colposcopy! This means I have HPV right!? Also, are HPV types 16 and 18 the ones that typically require a colposcopy? But these types don't cause genital warts correct? Sooo what is up with the itching!? I'm so confused and scared :(

Abnormal pap does not mean HPV. It can be a bacterial infection, HPV, warts, or anything else that can cause the cells of the cervix to be inflammed. Show your bumps to your doctor again. Tell her they itch, as you have told us. Tell her your sexual history and let her make the diagnosis. Good Luck.

Hopefully your doctor will be able to set your mind at ease.

First, HPV doesn't cause itching. A lot of things can irritate the vagina, cause itching and cause bumps. Sometimes it's just that a little out of balance and irritated. Sometimes it's a minor infection of yeast or bacteria. It's not always something that needs to be treated. It may go away on its own, or it may need a simple treatment. Keep an eye on it and return to your doctor if the itching continues.

The abnormal pap and colposcopy is probably unrelated to itching. The pap test does not determine the HPV type. It only detects abnormalities in cervical cells, some of which indicate HPV. The fact that you have a colposcopy scheduled does not mean that you have a dangerous strain of HPV. It's just the next test to get more info.

Try to hang in there. I know it's stressful, but many many women go through this and discover that there is no problem (me included).

Good luck!

This website will assist you with educating yourself about HPV and other STD also other worries about contagious diseases or health concerns.

I am a victim of HPV. I had to get a Hysterectomy performed. Yes, at your age if they do find it at a severe stage they will recommend a Total Hysterectomy. I am 46. I had been diagnose and lived with it for 6 years until I had to do the surgery or I would have died.
Yes, some teens do get rid of the HPV but it will always be in your blood and may appear when you get to be over 40.
This test they will provide a better diagnose of your cells in the cervix to see if it's mild dyplasia or severe. Just let the doctor do what they need to do. Have a friend go with you as it will get traumatic. No one likes bad news but it's best you have someone there with you. They will call you about 2-3 weeks later for the results as they take a sample of the cells to the laboratory to further examine it and they place it in a incubator. If they find no findings they will send a letter or may call. I know my doctor office always called. I had gotten use to it. The first two years of fighting with the results I was a nervous wreck. Just pray and it will go away. Btw, condoms may protect but they don't protect to outer skin layers meaning your thighs or pubic area. Just visit that website.
