Can you test a man for HPV?

Can you test a man for HPV?

Usually when a man is checked it is because his partner has had an abnormal pap. His penis is wrapped in gauze soaked in acidic acid for about 15 minutes after it is unwrapped a doctor will exam him under bright light and magnified lenses.

My ex-husband is a urologist and did this often.

There are no commercially available, FDA-approved tests to detect HPV in men.

An effective, reliable way to collect a sample of male genital skin cells (which would allow the detection of HPV) has yet to be developed. Thus, there is currently no FDA approved test to detect HPV in men. However, the CDC advises men that they don鈥檛 need to be worried about the lack of an HPV test for them. The agency states that "there is no clear health benefit to knowing if men have this virus, since HPV is unlikely to affect their health and cannot be treated. For most men, there would be no need to treat HPV, even if treatment were available, since it usually goes away on its own."

HPV usually does not produce any symptoms. Even if the virus causes changes in the skin cells, they are often so minor that they are unnoticeable. When there are noticeable changes, the most common result is genital warts. These typically appear around the anus or on the penis, scrotum, groin, or thighs. Rarely, high-risk types of HPV can cause certain kinds of cancer, such as cancer of the penis or anus.
