? about HPV & cancer?

my best friend has HPV & may have cancer- she was told she needed to have surgery to clean out her insides & to if it's cancer but she doesn't want to have the surgery because it's gonna cost to much- has anyone been though this or know anything about it?

she has health insurance but she still has to pay about $2,000 & she makes to much for medicaid

Your best friend had a pap test that came back abnormal.

The pap specimen should have been tested for HPV either through a DNA test or a PCR test.

The next step is for a colposcopy, this is where the doctor looks at the cervix and rubs a vinegar solution across the cervix, if any areas turn white that is an indication of an HPV infection. At that point, the doctor would take a biopsy of the affected area and a biopsy of the inside of the cervical wall and send the specimens to a pathologist. The pathologist will determine the extent of the infection and based on these findings the doctor will make recommendations for follow up. Sometimes it is repeat pap tests every three months and sometimes it is to remove the affected area (s). The affected areas can been removed through cryotherapy (frozen off) or through LEEP (cut off). All of these procedures are an outpatient procedure, meaning an over-night stay is unlikely.

You best friend may get a second opinion, if she would like, before having any procedure done.

If her doctor(s) determine cryotherapy or LEEP is needed your best friend should have the procedure done. If she does not have it done she could become infertile or even die.

Medical procedures can be expensive, but a lot of hospitals and clinics can work out a payment plan. Planned Parenthood or a women's clinic may even be able to perform the procedure at a discounted rate.

I encourage your friend to discuss all of the options with her doctor, explore options at Planned Parenthood or a women's clinic, and to not put this off.

Tell your friend- whats better: going in debt with hospital bills or dying of cancer (i dont mean to put it so bluntly but its the truth). Has she tried getting medicaid/medicare. Tell her to contact Health and Human Services in her area.
