HPV, Denied an earlier colposcopy appointment?!?

I found out I had high risk hpv in february through dna testing. I had an abnormal pap smear in march, cin 1. They made my colposcopy appointment in june. I now know I am going to have my period. I called and told them and I said that I really need an earlier appointment as 3 months is a long time, but nope. No openings. Why is this? Isnt this considered somewhat urgent? I know the numbers favor it regressing, but its possible it could get worse. What should I do?

I also asked for ANY doctor in their office

I would not wait for 3 months. Cin1 is a pre-cancer. The colpo is a diagnostic procedure to let you know if those results correlate or agree with your current diagnosis-they take a higher scraping of your cervix and a little more-it's like a tiny biopsy. They need these results to decide whether or not you need more extensive treatment such as a Leep procedure or surgery. I would not wait. I would get my results and book an appointment with another doctor who is recommended to you.

You can call another Dr. in another practice if you really feel it is urgent and you cannot wait. But you can't make them move the appt up because it is inconvenient for you.

Logically, your not the only patient in the world and there are many people out there with problems that surpass yours in severity. If your doctor's thought you were in major danger I'm sure they would move your appointment closer but I would trust their judgement. Chances are, if you ask nicely, that your doctor's office will give you a call if they have any cancellations or openings in their schedule.

The reason they are most likely not too concerned is that the VAST majority of HPV infections (including those that have resulted in CIN1) regress. That is they go away. Even the majority of CIN2 and CIN 3 will regress or go away.

And the course of the disease is very slow.

There is a lot of misinformation out there about abonormal paps, HPV, and cancer. 3 months is not an unusually long time to wait.

I understand your being afraid. But be assured. 3 months is not waiting too long, especially with only CIN1.

So, to answer your question....it isn't considered urgent. Not in relation to other illnesses.

PS. I get questions just like this all the time, and it shows that GYNOs and their staff need to educate their patients more about the nature of HPV infection to allay some of their fears, especially before sending them on their way....

Good luck, and remember, your immune system will likely take care of the infection and if not, there is a considerable amount of time between now and the possibility of cancer.

EDIT: I just spoke with an GYNO who specializes in gynecologic oncology and she said that the current recommended guidelines for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology treatment recommendations say that as far as treatment goes, if CIN1 persists for at least 2 years, EITHER continued follow up or treatment is acceptable.
