HPV question!?!?

My doctor suggested I get the HPV shot. Can you only get hpv through sexual intercourse? How many HPV people actually get cervical cancer? I'm 15 and not sure if I should get the shot or not since it is so new and they dont know the long term affects it could have yet. thx for your help

Great question. Yes HPV can only be contracted through sexual intercourse, and people care about it because condoms can not protect against HPV. The virus is so small that it goes right though the condom, and additionally is all over the skin in that area, and does not require fluid to fluid contact.

HPV is shown to be correlated with cervical cancer. However, a single infection is very minor, and you don't necessarily have any symptoms telling you that you've been infected. Your body will fight it off and you will return to being healthy. What is dangerous is constant reinfection with multiple strains of HPV. For instance, if you only have sex with 1 person, even if they have HPV, you will become infected, but you will become immune to that strain of HPV.

You get cervical cancer when you are infected with many different strains of HPV. Your chances of getting cancer are proportional to how many differnt people you have sex with.

In research, the HPV vaccine was effective in mice, but people's reproductive systems are different and a newly understood fact might mean that the vaccine is worthless in human females. I do biomedical research as a career so I am not putting it down, but in this case I don't believe that the vaccine will be effective in girls. In fact the data comming in from women that have gotten the vaccine show that they get infected with HPV at the same rates as women without the vaccine.

Interestingly, it would be a great idea if all boys got vaccinated with Gardisil, which is what they are trying to push for right now. However, this is hard to convince people to do, because boys really arn't affected by the disease themselves...

idk all the detailson the vaccine but i do know im and im not getting the shot bc its so new and idk if its effective
