Is it possible to have a normal pap and still have the HPV?

Is it possible to have a normal pap and still have the HPV?

Sometimes it can take a while for it to show up.

To answer your question, yes.

Some of the reasons:

It may take years for abnormal cell changes to develop after the initial infection.

An HPV test may not be done if there were no abnoral cell changes. A Pap is a good test but it can miss abnormal cell changes.

If you have genital warts are just of the vulva then your HPV may not have entered the vaginal canal or the cervix.

A Pap is only screening for abnormal cell changes of the cervix. No vulva cells are collected.

Our HPV test only screens for high risk HPV types. Visible genital warts of the vulva are most commonly low risk HPV types. The only FDA approved HPV test does not screen for low risk HPV types.

Also they are a few HPV types that are not screening for in our HPV test.

Testing positive for high risk HPV types does not mean that you will always test positive. Once your high risk HPV types are controlled by your immune system then the virus goes into low virus low and it is not picked up on any test.

I wish you well.
