My doctor told me my pap smear came back abnormal and i tested positive for HPV...?

so i have to go back next week to have a colposcopy and i scared crapless i decided to go and get checked out and have my first pap smear and this happens...what is the procedure ...does this mean i have cancer? I have a monthy menstural cycle and dont notice anything out of the ordinary ....i had just got off of my period 2 days before going to get a pap smear could it be possible that it was a mistake?

My doctor also told me im 1 out of 10 as far as HPV whatever that means

I had the same thing, it usually goes away on its own in time. My dr. told me 80% of women have it and don't know it. You will be fine

Back in january of this year I went an got my yearly pap smear test, and they called me and told me I could have low-grade abnormal cells of hpv, so they rescheduled me for another appointment to retest and it was normal I did't have hpv. It could just be an error of some sort, or sometimes yeast infections can cause pap smears to come out to be abnormal !. If you do have it , sometimes it will go away on its own by eating fruits, veggies, yogurt, drinking 8 glassess of water,an taking a multiple vitamin for iron.....:) I hope everything turns out okay!

Your period has nothing to do with HPV. You have the virus that causes genital warts. No, you don't have cancer, but you could have an increased risk of developing cervical cancer later on. Your doctor just want's to take a closer look at your cervix. It's a painless procedure, so don't be scared.

Human papaloma virus...it can lead to cervical canser or warts... thats why theres that shot called gardisil..hpv is the most common STD

did your doctor say how long u might have had it??

Is HPV what causes genetil warts then??

First of all HPV is becomming one of the most common STDs. Like 1 in 3 people have it. There are rarely symptoms or signs of this. There are 2 kinds. 1 that unfortunately can LEAD to cervical cancer but just because you tested possitive for HPV that doesn't mean you have it.

Your period has nothing to do with it and no, the odds of them making mistake are not big.

I actually found out that I had HPV (the precancerous kind) years ago before anyone knew much about it. The colposcopy isn't that bad. It will be a little uncomfortable but it will remove the infected area (that they will send in for more testing) You will always be a carrier though. It is a virus and could become active again. And you can still give it to other people.

It's a very good thing that you did decide to go get a pap and learned this because when it's not taken care of is when it can develope into something much worse.

There are plenty of websites online that you can learn more about it all. There are also online support groups/forums/etc.
