Routine pap smear/HPV?

This is pretty humbling to ask, let's just start with that.

My question is, would HPV show up on a routine pap smear? I'm asking because my boyfriend has apparently flared up with something (he seems to think it's warts) and I'm of course the #1 suspect - though I've never had any problems down there, and all my tests and whatnot have always come back with no problems. My last gynie visit was actually in September of 07 and it came back all okay. But in the chance that I am in fact a carrier with no apparent symptoms, would that show up in just a normal pap smear?

Don't worry, we're going to take necessary steps and whatnot, I'm just trying to ease my worried mind for the time being.

A pap smear looks for abnormal cervical cell changes鈥hen a second part of the pap is run screening for high risk HPV types. The HPV test does not screen for low risk HPV types. Most visible genital warts are low risk HPV types 6 or 11. Some people with low risk HPV types also carry a co-infection with high risk HPV types. Your Pap smear only screens the cervix no vulva cells are taken.

Your Pap smear in 07 could have miss abnormal cervical cell changes鈥?you may not have developed cervical cell changes yet鈥n HPV test may not have been done since no cell changes were found鈥?or you could have low risk HPV types that are not screened for in the HPV test.

It can take years before cervical abnormal cell changes develop. Many people carry the virus with no signs or symptoms.

If your boyfriend鈥檚 problems are HPV then you and he most probably share your HPV types. It is important for him to be checked and treated. Condoms can help in the regression of the virus.

A Pap smear tests for abnormal cervical cells, not the HPV virus which may ahve caused those abnormalities

" How do I know if I have HPV?

Most women only become aware of the fact that they have HPV when they have genital warts or abnormal Pap test results. HPV can also be detected by a test that analyzes DNA from the body's cells. This test called Hybrid Capture II (HCII) detects the specific types of HPV that have been linked with cervical cancer. "
