Abnormal Pap Smear, Pregnant, HPV? |
I am pregnant with my second child and am in my first trimester. I just had a pap smear done that had abnormal results. I have gotten normal pap smears yearly for the past 2-3 years (have never had them before that). I have been with my husband exclusively for more than 10 years. He has only had 2 partners years before he met me. He is the only one I have ever been with. Is it possible that he transmitted HPV to me and only after 10+ years, it's showing itself? redoing the pap smear. A pap smear can be returned as abnormal for many reasons, including hormonal changes associated with the pregnancy. Sometimes it is just a matter of who looked at the smear sample deciding to call it that way. Although it's worrisome for you, it may mean nothing more than a call on the side of safety and not that there is a problem. It is possible you have had HPV for some time, and suppressed it, so you had no symptoms. Even if the repeat pap smear is still abnormal, it doesn't mean you have cervical cancer. It just means the cells look odd. Aside from the repeat pap smear, they won't be doing anything more until after deliver, and you will be quite safe to wait. After delivery, when you have your six weeks check, the doctor could even choose to do yet another pap smear- on the chance this was a hormone driven change. If that one is abnormal, then the next step would be a colposcopy to find the exact weird area, and take a tissue sample there. The next step is either a LEEP procedure or cold cauterization. Those remove the area that is questionable, and usually solves the problem permanently. And it will leave your cervix intact so you can still have more children if you wish. I know it puts a grey cloud on things at the moment, but honestly it doesn't need to. Abnormal just means the cells didn't look like they were expected to. And that is ALL it means at the moment. You do NOT have cervical cancer, and your baby is quite safe. Make a list of the questions you have for your doctor, and get the answers at your next visit. In the meantime, just try to stay calm. It's quite possible the next one will be clear. Some ladies seem to swap between the two, and they never exactly figure out why. Good luck dear, and have a healthy baby. |
