HPV virus will it test positive on every pap smear?

They said there is no cure for the virus but that it should go away after 8 months. I was wondering if it'll show on every pap smear that I have the virus HPV ?

As Biscuit says, Paps test for abnormal cervical cells, not for the HPV virus. That is done in women with a DNA based test;however its results are not always reliable. In general, if you are at risk due to exposure (which admittedly is hard to determine) and/or family history and/or other factors your physician may identify, pap tests should be done at least as often as s/he suggests.

Here is an interesting, related bit from the site below:
"
My Pap test result was a "false positive." What does this mean?

Pap tests are not always 100 percent correct. False positive and false negative results can happen. This can be upsetting and confusing. A false positive Pap test is when a woman is told she has abnormal cervical cells, but the cells are really normal. If your doctor says your Pap results were a false positive, there is no problem.

A false negative Pap test is when a woman is told her cells are normal, but in fact, there is a problem with the cervical cells that was missed. False negatives delay the discovery and treatment of unhealthy cells of the cervix. But, having regular Pap tests boosts your chances of finding any problems. If abnormal cells are missed at one time, they will probably be found on your next Pap test.."

as long as you still have it, it will show up, however the PAP isn't what detects the virus. the gyno has to specifically test for HPV. you should be tested for HPV, and get PAPS, every 6 months until the virus clears.

the reson for the PAPS every 6 months is because HPV can start to change the cervical cells into pre-cancerous cells, and these changing/pre-cancerous cells are what is detected by the PAPsmear.

Once your body (immune system) detects the virus in your system, it will 'attack' it as foreign, eventually clearing it from your system.

Hence, the PAPS every 6 months until it is cleared. ALso, if those changing/ pre-cancerous cells are detected, there are procedures that can be done to remove and biopsy those cells.

The most important thing here is to stay up on those every 6month PAPS, and catch things as early as possible.

Nope! =) The HPV virus may not even show up on a pap smear! The only real way to find out is to have the HPV test done...(women only!) and it doesn't make every pap smear abnormal...some woman are married and monogamous with their husbands for years and years & have normal paps then all of a sudden BOOM- abnormal cells & positive hpv test..

the hpv test only picks up active infections..& HPV can lay dormant for several years...
ps. it can take up to 2 years for it to go away.

I showed positive for HPV a few years ago but now it is not detected in my smear tests.

Edited to say that in my last smear test i was tested for HPV as well and it was negative

Certain procedure can remove the HPV from the Cervix. It can re-occurr if you become infected again.

opps sorry read. HIV instead of HPV. no i dont think HPV will show up in a pap test.
