HPV stands for human paploma virus. This is one of the reasons that a gyne does a yearly pap to check for this. This virus can lay dormant in the system undetected for years, and make you infertile if left untreated. This is an STD where most men do not show symptoms, but transmit it to the women. This is the cause of cervicle cancer. I saw a show a while ago that said that if every woman gets the HPV vaccine, that this could maybe one day eradicate cervical cancer. They are trying to make it where the vaccine is a requirement for females with all other vaccinations that a child must receive before going to school. The vaccination is given in three doses, and is recommended for females under the age of twenty-six. Source(s): Work in a gyne office
